GRACE Christian Baseball

Last season, Grace Christian won its first conference championship in school history. They achieved this by going undefeated in conference play and beating Cary Christian on their home field to clinch the title. The Eagles earned a home seed in the state playoffs and faced a superior Caldwell Academy. They lost the game 10-2 and vowed to get back in the same spot and make a state championship run. After the season, the Eagles underwent a coaching change when Coach Charlie Murphy was asked to resign after 10 years of coaching. The 2017 Eagles seemed posed to defend the title and have a better year than in 2016. However coaching turnover led to a slow start.

The GRACE Christian Eagles Varsity Baseball program dropped its first 6 games. They played a lot of tough out of conference games and were outmatched in several games but the losses to Trinity of Durham and Freedom Christian were huge blows to their shot at the state playoffs. But the Eagles have seemed to turn it around. They have mounted a 4 game winning streak including quality wins against conference foes Cary Christian and Trinity of Raleigh. They hope to continue the streak against Faith Christian, who they played earlier in the year. Faith is #2 in the state and has a very solid program. They beat GRACE 5-4 this year and only have one loss against the defending champs Northside Christian. If the Eagles can upset Faith they will be back in the talk for state playoff contention and move up in the standings. We’ll see if they can keep the momentum, and the streak, Thursday at Faith Christian.
